How To Keep Your Socks From Getting Holes

Finding a hole in your favorite pair of socks is one of the most frustrating experiences.

Even worse is finding a hole in a pair of socks you’ve only worn a couple of times! Our first piece of advice when it comes to hole-free socks is to invest in well-made socks from premium yarn. You get what you pay for in the sock industry. Although a low price tag might lure you in, low quality socks tend to be uncomfortable and definitely don’t last long.

Now that you’ve decided to invest in quality socks that will have a long life in your sock drawer, you must learn how to take care of them properly. In order to make them last as long as possible and to prevent holes, it’s important to properly clean and store your socks.

Since we wear our socks for many hours at a time, it’s important to wash our socks at least every other time you wear them.

Although you can hand wash your socks to preserve life, most people prefer to machine wash them. If you choose to machine wash your socks, place them on a delicate cycle with other delicate items like bras and underwear. You may use a mesh laundry bag to keep the socks separate from other items in the load. This will prevent snagging, color transfer or pilling. If possible, air dry your socks. If that is not an option, you may machine dry your socks on a delicate cycle.

Every time we machine wash our socks, it breaks down the yarn ever so slightly.

Since socks are a daily use clothing item, we end up using and washing our socks more frequently than other pieces of clothing. If we wash our socks with care each time, we can preserve the yarn. Holes come up as the yarn gets thinner and weaker from constant use and machine washing.

The way in which we take care of and wash our socks can have an effect on if and when we will see holes in our favorite socks. It is possible to keep our socks hole-free with the proper care and investing in a quality sock!
